Voyage of the Esperance by M0nkeyBread Voyage of the Esperance by M0nkeyBread
:iconsticmann: speed paint challenge.

Producing an expressionist piece was the goal.
I wanted to keep it pretty loose. I did it quickly to try and keep the expression of emotion in it consistent to the moment I started doing it.

Did I get there? Not sure.
Is this any good? You can be the judge
Was it fun? Absolutely.

I like this. With all that color, I'm surprised the boat is black and white, but it certainly distinguishes it from the background. As far as color, I really like the reds and oranges and think that if you'd used warm blues and just avoided the pure blue it wouldn't have "jarred" sticmann's sense of aesthetics. ;)

heyhey, look who's back! The absence due to a cool new job in layout I hope.. ;) I agree about the colours, it was the jarring nature of them that I liked.
Righty... [sleeves rolled up] now to answer the other comments :P

lol, and I dropped off the face of the world again, didn't I? Sorry! I've missed you guys! But the few times I tried to draw lately come out terrible and I avoid DA from the shame of having nothing new to post.

yep you did drop out there for a bit. Sticmann has also dropped himself out except for the odd watercolour now...(a change in philosophy), and I have been somewhat absent of late due to being worked like a slave (doing some nights and weekends too)

You must fight the shame...the shame only exists within yourself...if you accept the shame, bring it into the fold....the shame will have no power over you. Hmmm p'raps I should start writing my very own mystic self-help book ?? ;)

LOL vaguely inspiring and very mystic-y. I'm sure it would sell... Yeah, I think I'm not going to be a regular player like I was before... I have a few random doodles from work meetings I could probably post. I have a couple ideas for paintings on ACTUAL CANVAS (!) that I want to do sometime, and will post photos if I ever get around to them. My work schedule isn't easing up much, but I am adapting. I'll PM you. :)

I like it. Great sense of movement with the rolling waves and the rippling sail. It has a magical feel to it. Looks like they're off to some great adventure :)

Thanks :D this was one of those where the palette was chosen before I had anything in mind by the way. ;)

Well, the palette is actually bordering on obnoxious with the intense red and blue right next to each other. :P On the other hand, it does push it more into the unreal, fantasy (or other-worldly) type setting. On the other hand (3?) the waves and ship are already doing that. So, I don't know. :B

many many hands...must be nice. ;) Obnoxious, that's a bit harsh isn't it? but I see what you mean, it's almost into that eye jarring contrasty thing like when you use 3d glasses to look at regular things. I do think the colours do push it that extra bit into the surreal that just usual colours wouldn't, also this was an expressionist attempt, which after all was known for the use of bold non-representational colours and so on ;)

Yeah, that 3D thing is what I was talking about, but you're right about using the non-representational colors.
